I’m Giving Up Time Traveling

Matthew 6: 33 (NIV)

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The other day I woke up feeling a little melancholy.  The New Year tends to bring reflection on those things we wish to accomplish and things that we have yet to see come to fruition.

I woke up feeling that somehow I had missed the boat.  That in my 47 years of life on this planet I have yet to see some of the things that I had envisioned for my life.  Now I know better than to entertain this thought, because I have experienced too many breakthroughs and miracles to doubt God’s hand in my destiny.

But what causes these periodic moments of dissatisfaction?  Why do I sometimes look at my life and feel disappointed and stuck?  Maybe you can relate to these feelings.

I have come to the conclusion that many of us are still trying to be time travelers.

Many times when we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we have in our minds how we will feel when we accomplish our goal.  We think about how much better our lives will be and what the impact will be on the people around us.

Sometimes, we want to be like we were in the past.  Younger, more energetic, more educated, more something…  something that we feel that we missed (or squandered) and we want that feeling back.

We are not satisfied with the people we are in the present.

So we try to drag the past into our present.  Or we attempt to predict the future and imagine what our new selves well be like once we reach our goals, then we try to drag that future image of ourselves into the present.

Meanwhile, the moment we are living in- the present day- is forgotten and not appreciated.  We busy ourselves trying to make ourselves what we were back in the day or what we could be tomorrow if we just put our minds to it.

There is nothing wrong with setting goals, but how about setting goals that don’t try to remake your past self? What about setting goals to improve the person you are in the moment you live in now?  We don’t know what tomorrow will bring.   What have we missed today?

Seeking the Lord first in all of our plans will keep us focused on the present.  When the morning comes and the first thing we do is ask the Lord to show us His will for our lives and the strength to obey Him, our desires will line up with His and our best destinies will be reached moment by moment.  And yes, He will give us the unction to make plans for our lives according to His will, but never at the expense of the day He has given us.

Psalm 118:24 (AMP)

24 This is the day which the Lord has brought about; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Are we really rejoicing in this day? Or are we mourning a day that will never be seen again or waiting for a better day to come?

I’m giving up time traveling.  How about you?

Blessings!
