The Title On My Nameplate

When did titles become so important to some of us?

I think it is a false ambition that makes us want to feel “better than” or superior than others.

I don’t think that makes us evil.  I think it makes us human.

Most of us want to feel worthy of the space we take up on the planet.

I used to be (very) slightly saddened when I thought that if we had an apocalypse, I wouldn’t be special enough to go into one of those special bunkers created for those who someone determined was the “best of us”.

I used to think that what little difference I made to those around me wasn’t ever going to get me a Nobel Peace Prize.

That I was just another cog in the wheel of industry.  Or another little bitty lit candle at the altar.

Welcome to ordinary, right?

But there is a greater part of this that is sometimes easy to forget.

Matthew 23:12 (NIV)

12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

This is important for Christians to realize, especially when feeling particularly humbled.  Or like what we do doesn’t matter in the great scheme of things.  Sometimes, we can really feel small.

Everything we do matters. Not just to our community, but in the eyes of the Lord.

Who would we rather be exalted by?  God or man?

Now, I’m not saying it doesn’t feel good to be given a title, or esteemed by the greater community.  It feels wonderful if you can get a gig like that.  But the thing is, man gives us temporary titles.  Even if you manage to keep it till you die, someone else will pick it right up.

What God gives is permanent.

So next time I think my title isn’t good enough, I’ll remember who I am to Him.  And the same title applies to you.

Beloved.

Romans 9:25  (AMP)
25 Just as He says in [the writings of the prophet] Hosea:

“I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’
And [I will call] her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”

Blessings!
