The Essential Guide to Prayer-How to Pray with Power and Effectiveness by Dutch Sheets is a lovely book about the necessity of intercessory prayer. I enjoyed the personal accounts Pastor Sheets gives the reader about his and others’ experiences while being called to intercessory prayer. These accounts give depth and intensity to what happens when we submit to the holy task of going before the throne of grace on behalf of others.
The Essential Guide to Prayer-How to Pray with Power and Effectiveness is meant to inspire and encourage those of us who labor in the trenches for God’s will to be done in the lives of others. It underlines the importance of having and intimate relationship with God the Father and allows us to understand that this relationship is what gives insight into how we should intercede and why.
It is not a “preachy” book, but explains what can be a complex concept in a way that is understood by all.
One of the features of this book is a section at the end of each chapter called “Did you understand?” This feature allows for reflection for each main point of the chapter and allows for a pause point between chapters.
There are several different phrases in this book that stick with me. One in particular was, “You are Him here”. Although Pastor Sheets attributed that quote to its rightful author, it sums up what I took away from the book.
When we truly have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, we can understand His heart and His loving desire for our prayers to be answered.
The Essential Guide to Prayer-How to Pray with Power and Effectiveness weaves the knowledge of that love through its pages.
