VOICES

BlueVoice

I became a writer to keep my voice.

As difficult as it is to admit, there are times when I feel my voice is not welcome.

My wisdom, memory, love, encouragement, and curiosity can be seen as arrogance, insanity, obsession, presumption, and audacity.

At times I have been backed into a corner of silence because for some to face my words means that they have to face their presumptions.  What folks don’t understand is that I face my own errors every day and even if they are painful, I still own them because once I learn from them they make me a better, more tolerant, and more compassionate person.

There have been times when I have been told my voice is too loud.  But what does that mean?  I have found that when people have loud voices, it is because they feel they are regularly ignored or disrespected.  Sometimes they feel inadequate.  Sometimes they get tired of being silent.  There may be times they have been misunderstood and want the misunderstanding to stop.  Often they actually have something important to say and they want to be heard above the fray.

A loud voice can be many things.  Sure, it can be spoken.  But sometimes a person can be seen as loud just by being present in their authentic selves.  When we see someone who is comfortable in their own skin and we are not, they can seem loud to us.  It seems they are shouting at us because they make us uncomfortable because we haven’t found our own authenticity.  A person may be loud when they express views that we don’t agree with even if they are speaking in a whisper.  An individual can seem loud if we “hate” them and they are in our presence.  All they are doing is taking up space on the planet and in our ignorance or bigotry we think they are loud.

Some of us keep our voices under wraps because we don’t want to offend anyone.  We don’t want to be seen as loud.

I am here to tell you right now if you are one of those people trying to lower your voice, give it up.  Your voice will always be loud to people who want to silence you.  If you can’t speak it, write it.  Or sing it.  Or pray it.  And yes-shout it.   Keep your voice.  Someone out there needs to hear it.
